Yoga, hiking and calm in the Scottish Highlands

Fra 13.900 kr.Sold outJoin the waitlist

Scotland is the epitome of beautiful nature, open expanses and calm. This nature forms the setting for a lovely yoga retreat, where we stay in a green valley deep inside Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands. You'll experience a retreat where you truly feel CALM seep into every single cell of your body. You'll experience your mind growing quiet. The combination of yin yoga, meditations, mindfulness, hiking, matchlessly beautiful nature and silence gives you a wholly unique experience of CALM. A calm you may never have felt in this way before.

Yoga

In small moments we affect body and mind throughout the day and practise yin yoga in a brand-new yoga studio. The yoga studio has floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows and a view out over the Glen Clova valley's rolling landscape with grass- and heather-clad hills and mountains in the background. Here live sheep, cattle, partridges, grouse and red deer, and the birdlife is rich and varied.

Opportunity for hiking

Between the yoga sessions there is the opportunity to take part in hikes in the national park's valleys, hills and mountains around the hotel, where there are a number of fine hiking trails. On some hikes we bring packed lunches so that we can enjoy nature for hours. Along the way we often walk in silence, take breaks and surrender to the sounds, plants, flowers, trees and the views around us. The heather blooms in August, and Glen Clova is especially beautiful at this time of year. It's summer in Scotland in August, and although the Scottish weather is changeable, it's often mild and a good time to visit the country.

Opportunity for silence

We offer the option of spending a full day in silence (which can be extended). It is often in silence that we hear what comes from within. Answers to what we're pondering and wrestling with. We eat our meals, do yoga, hike and enjoy our own company in silence.

During the week we generally have plenty of time to wind down and relax - be it with knitting, a good book, the sketch pad or whatever we relax with. We have the time and space to enjoy the surroundings' silence, colours, nature, animal and plant life. Within walking distance of the hotel runs a little stream you can bathe in. The water in Scotland is cold and refreshing, and revives body and skin.

The food

At the retreat we eat locally produced ingredients. The hotel has its own stock of both lamb and game, which we're served in classic Scottish dishes during the week. The Angus region, where we stay, has some of Scotland's best farmland with grain fields, berry plantations, vegetables, and beef and dairy cattle, whose crops and produce feature in the meals. If you're a vegetarian there is of course good food to be had too.

Where we stay

At the retreat we stay at Hotel Glen Clova in the Scottish Highlands. The hotel lies in the Glen Clova valley, one of the five valleys collectively known as The Angus Glens, located in the eastern part of Cairngorms National Park. The hotel stands on its own with a half-hour drive to the nearest small town, Kirriemuir. The hotel is family-owned, and the family also owns a larger stretch of land around the hotel and keeps sheep. We often have the hotel to ourselves during the week, and there's a garden with a lawn, tables and benches, plus fields and hills around to relax in, paths to walk on, and the place is ideally suited to getting your pulse down on a retreat in nature.

Can I take part in yin yoga?

Yes, EVERYONE can take part. It takes place sitting and lying on the yoga mat. It involves gentle, slow movements and postures in which we sit/lie still for 2-5 minutes. We work with the nervous system, breathing, tendons, ligaments, bones and connective tissue. Together this brings, among other things, less pain, greater flexibility, more energy, fewer tensions and CALM in body and mind.

Account is taken of the ailments each individual body has.

SILENCE BEGINS

10.15 You can choose to take part in a hike in silence with packed lunches in the Glen Doll valley up to a waterfall with Camilla. The hike starts after a short 5-kilometre bus ride down to the Glen Doll valley. From here we hike through the coniferous forest up onto a corrie, a large open green "amphitheatre", where we suddenly stand surrounded by high mountain walls. We experience how nature has been shaped by volcanoes and ice ages. A winding stream forces its way across the plateau between boggy peat and blocks of greyish granite, solidified lava, heather and alpine plants, and leads us up to Glen Doll's waterfall, which roars when it has rained. The area is fantastically beautiful. We can choose to walk all the way up to the waterfall, and eat packed lunches along the way, before we hike back to where the bus waits.

The route is 10 kilometres, and we walk on paths of gravel and stone. It goes a little up and down hill, and the hike requires ordinary good fitness. The last part up to the waterfall requires good balance, as the path is narrow, winding and uneven, and if it has rained a lot, there may be small streams to hop over. You don't have to go all the way up there, though, and can sit at the plateau and enjoy the nature and the view up towards the waterfall before we all walk back together.

Along the way we take breaks and surrender to the sounds, plants, flowers, trees and the views around us.

At around 14:30 the bus drives back to the folk high school. You can also choose to extend the hike and walk the 5 km home to the folk high school along the more or less flat, quiet country road

Instead of hiking, you can choose to spend the day at the hotel, with the option to bathe in the nearby stream, use the yoga studio and garden, take a walk in the hills and valley, or sit with a book, knitting, sketch pad, take photos, etc.

Lunch: either buy a packed lunch to bring on the hike, or otherwise at your own expense at the hotel

16.30 - 18.30 Yin yoga by Sanna

19.00 Dinner in silence. You can choose to eat either in the dining hall, in your room or somewhere else in the house, as you wish.

20.00 Guided seated meditation by Sanna

20.45 Coffee, tea, water, fruit

Day 4: Wednesday 12.8

8.00 - 9.00 Yin yoga by Sanna

SILENCE ENDS (though it can be extended)

9.00 Breakfast buffet

10.15 You can choose to take part in a hike along the Minister's Path from the hotel to the neighbouring valley Glen Prosen with Camilla and Sanna. We set out from the hotel in Glen Clova along the minister's old route, The Minister's Path. In the old days the minister served both valleys, and he walked between the churches along this path when he was to give a sermon. The route leads us through valley and forest, up and over hills and heather-clad moor. Along the way we take a break, where Sanna will hold a guided meditation in nature. We bring packed lunches and eat along the way.

From Glen Prosen we drive by bus for half an hour back to the folk high school. Both the bell heather and the ling are especially beautiful up here in the hills in August, and there's a whole "purple carpet" along this stretch.

The route is 12 km, and we walk on country road and paths of asphalt, gravel and grass. There are hills along the way and the hike requires ordinary good fitness.

At around 15.00 the bus drives us back from Glen Prosen to the hotel

Instead of hiking, you can choose to spend the day at the hotel, with the option to bathe in the nearby stream, use the yoga studio and garden, take a walk in the hills and valley, or sit with a book, knitting, sketch pad, take photos, etc

Lunch: either buy a packed lunch to bring on the hike, or otherwise at your own expense at the hotel

16.30 - 18.30 Yin yoga by Sanna

19.00 Dinner

20.00 Own meditation

20.45 Coffee, tea, water, fruit

Day 5: Thursday 13.8

7.30 - 9.00 Yin yoga by Sanna

9.00 Breakfast buffet

10.15 You can choose to take part in a hike with Camilla. Today we go up into the steeper hills behind the hotel with a fantastic view out over the whole valley and the mountains. Wind and weather decide how far we go, and the route is set the day before. We walk about 5 kilometres on gravel, stone and grass and return for lunch at the hotel, but you can also bring a packed lunch and eat lunch up in the hills and come down on your own later.

Instead of hiking, you can choose to spend the day at the hotel, with the option to bathe in the nearby stream, use the yoga studio and garden, take a walk in the hills and valley, or sit with a book, knitting, sketch pad, take photos, etc

Lunch: At your own expense at the hotel

Afternoon: We enjoy cosy company together in the garden in true Scottish style with a delicious "cream tea" consisting of tea and freshly baked scones with jam and whipped cream.

16.30 - 18.30 Yin yoga by Sanna

19.00 We round off the retreat with a festive dinner at the hotel

Day 6: Friday 14.8

8.00 - 9.00 Yin yoga by Sanna

9.00 Breakfast buffet and checking out of rooms

10.15 Rounding off, reflection and farewell

11.00 Drive to Edinburgh Airport

15.10 Departure from Edinburgh Airport on a direct Norwegian flight

17.55 (local time) Arrival at Copenhagen Airport

Everything in the programme is merely an offer. If along the way you need to opt in and out, you of course do so.

If you want to extend your stay in Scotland you can talk to Pernille at the office and possibly fly over earlier or stay longer. If you fly over earlier, you meet Camilla, Sanna and the rest of the group at the airport in Edinburgh on day 1, and travel with them up to the Highlands. If you stay in Scotland after the retreat, you can ride along to Edinburgh Airport on day 6.

Catering

Included is: half board, 5 x breakfast and 5 x dinner

Not included is: lunch: You can buy it yourself at the hotel, where there will be healthy options to buy salads, light sandwiches, etc.

Those who hike can buy a packed lunch at the hotel for the hiking days

Beliggenhed & ophold

For this summer course in the Scottish Highlands, we have chosen to stay in the United Kingdom's largest national park, Cairngorms. The park offers a wealth of hiking routes, magnificent highland nature with wildlife, mountains, mountain lakes, valleys, rivers and forest, plus farming with sheep, cattle and grain. We hold folk high school at the cosy, family-owned Glen Clova Hotel deep inside the Glen Clova valley surrounded by nature. Several of our hikes set out from here. The folk high school lies down by a river and has a large garden and its own small farm, which supplies the kitchen with meat and vegetables from the kitchen garden. The only neighbours are a couple of farms scattered around the area, and it's a 20-minute drive to the nearest town, Kirriemuir.

The folk high school has a two-storey main building with rooms, a dining hall, a lecture hall and a cosy bar with rustic long tables and local beer and whisky. In the garden there's an annexe with rooms, and there's plenty of space to sit outdoors and enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains, which rise up around the folk high school. When the weather allows, we eat outdoors in the evening.

Sanna Carlsen

Sanna runs YOGA by SANNA (yogabysanna.dk) and has, since January 2020, taught several hundred participants on yoga retreats. She was born in 1968 and has several YOGA ALLIANCE-certified yoga trainings behind her. She receives great praise for her presence and her ability to see the individual and teach based on what each individual body is capable of. She is professional and authentic in her way of teaching and being.

In all of Sanna's teaching there is a common thread that continually helps us to sense inwards. To sense body, mind and emotions and use our intuition. It makes us better at making conscious choices to include and exclude in our everyday life. Some years ago Sanna was affected by stress on several occasions. She knows as well as anyone what it means to have CALM and the ability to sense what does you good - and what drains you.

Here is a review of Sanna's teaching:

"Sanna guides in a soothing, clear, present, thorough, pleasant, prepared, skilled and experienced way. I notice tenderness in the lower back and less pain in the neck now that we're on our way home. I have less mental chatter, much better sleep, am happy and full of anticipation - no buzzing noises in my head - calm in the mind, clarity.

It has been a good stay with plenty of time for self-care, alone time - yin yoga in the right dose + meditation.

YES, I would love to go again. It gives me and my body the pause, the calm and the movement I need. SANNA IS VERY PROFESSIONAL." - Sophie Torp

What our guests say
