Walking, food and self-indulgence in Andalusia

Do you enjoy exploring new places in good company? Do you love to move and get out walking in nature? Do you like Spanish cuisine – or are you curious to get to know it better? Would you like to learn more about Andalusia and the region's culture, and on top of that take home a little food for thought about quality of life, exercise, job satisfaction and other wonderful subjects? Then sign up for this course.

Behind the course are folk high school principal and coach Anna Katrin Nørgaard, who has always had a soft spot for all things Spanish, yoga instructor Anamet Magven, who has lived in Andalusia and is married to an Andalusian and speaks fluent Spanish, and finally we have joined forces with several local people – namely:

Lucy Verney, who is an Irish chef and who has lived in our mountain village for 20 years. We met Lucy in 2024 and it was a great pleasure to work with her. Her cheerful nature and good humour are truly infectious, and on top of that she is a wonderful chef with a focus on local produce and tasty Andalusian food.

Florent Prunier – who is our local walking guide and who knows a great deal about the nature and wildlife in the area we walk in, as he is a trained biologist. And finally we work together with the local flamenco dancer Rocio Jimenez.

The house

We have found the most wonderful house in the mountain village of Gaucín, located about 90 minutes' drive from Malaga. The house is the setting for our folk high school and communal activities. The house is strongly marked by the short distance to North Africa. There is plenty of Arabic inspiration with many fine details. No two rooms are alike – they are beautiful in their own way and each with a private bathroom. We have both single and double rooms. And there are plenty of living rooms and kitchens for shared enjoyment and use. The house has lovely outdoor areas with a wonderful pool and a large roof terrace, where in clear weather we can see all the way to the coast of Africa. The cooking with Lucy Verney will take place in smaller groups in our "large kitchen", and when the food is ready, we eat up on the roof terrace.

We have rented an extra wonderful house, which is also decorated with inspiration from North Africa. The houses are located about 100 metres apart. There will be a small reduction in price for those of you who do not stay in the main house. All communal activities take place in the main house unless otherwise described in the programme.

The walks

All our walks start from our mountain village and are approx. 15-20 km. We walk in forests planted with cork oak, we walk across open stretches where the sun will make us sweat, and in some places we walk on narrow paths with uneven surfaces. There will be no difficult, prolonged climbs – either up or down. But you must be in good walking shape to take part.

We have joined forces with a local guide, Florent Prunier, who is also a biologist and nature guide. He knows all about Andalusia's flora and fauna and will tell us a little about what we see along the way.

There will also be the opportunity for an outing when we go on a day trip to the beautiful town of Ronda, which is known for the deep gorge that splits the town in two.

The village of Gaucín

Our folk high school is beautifully located in a small, charming mountain village, Gaucín. A number of artists have settled here, and there is a very good reason for that. Because it is simply breathtaking here. And almost no tourism.

So if you are hungry for new experiences and ready for a proper dose of self-indulgence? – then come with us on an adventure!

8.30 – 10.00 Breakfast at a small restaurant. You will also be given a packed lunch, fruit, etc.

Walk: A trip of approx. 5-6 hours with Florent, Anamet and Anna:

With the petrol station on our right, we start walking south-west. We follow the pavement for about 20 minutes, cross the road and take the dusty path uphill, gradually and gently. We continue until we find a gate, which we go through, and soon we walk along a wide path. We will see the Sierra Espartina on the left and Jimena de la Frontera right ahead of us. We follow this path, which leads us around the Hacho mountain, until we find another gate. We go through it and continue a few metres uphill to the right, passing a pig farm. We go through another gate and continue uphill to the next gate, which we cross, and take the path gradually uphill. We pass an old oven that was used to make lime in the old days. From here we start climbing to the Hacho summit, about 15 to 20 minutes. This is the only part of the trip that is a little demanding. Take your time, stop as needed, and don't rush. It can be a little slippery at times. We reach the summit at the geodetic point of 1011 m. We will see San Pablo de Buceite, Jimena de la Frontera, El Colmenar, and if the day is clear, we will see the Mediterranean and Africa. From here we cross over to the other side to get a picturesque view of Gaucín. We go down the same way we came up, until the oven, and in about 30 minutes we reach the petrol station bar – which is guaranteed to sell cold beers – if that's your thing!

Distance: About 12 km. Max. altitude: 1011 m. Min. altitude: 570 m.

Difficulty: Moderate. Surface: Loose stones, stony at times. A mix of wide and narrow paths.

Siesta – a chance to lounge by the pool on site.

18.30 Talk about Andalusia by Anamet and Anna + a shorter talk about tomorrow's trip to Ronda.

20.00 We go out to eat in Gaucín.

Sunday 4 October: Walk #2 + eating out

8.20 - 8.30 Morning singing.

8.30 Breakfast.

Making packed lunches.

10.00 Walk: A trip of approx. 4-5 hours with Florent, Anna and Anamet. Along the way we stop and do about 30 min. of yoga and meditation.

We take the road behind the petrol station "Camino del Montoro", and soon we are on the outskirts of Gaucín. We will pass some houses with land, where the locals have their kitchen garden and some hens for eggs and meat. We will see fruit trees, almonds, figs, olives and some vineyards. We continue on this path for 20 to 30 minutes until we find a metal gate. We go through it and continue down the path for another 20 to 30 minutes until we reach a crossroads. We turn right and continue downhill for 30 minutes. We walk with the Guadiaro valley on our left. From here we start walking uphill, although it is a gradual and gentle climb. About 45 minutes later we reach a spot where the group can do a little yoga and meditation. We continue uphill to the next crossroads, where we turn right and continue for another hour or so. Then we take a right turn, and soon we are walking surrounded by sweet chestnut trees. We follow the path, pass a red metal gate, until we find a right turn onto a narrow path that will lead us back to Gaucín.

Distance: 17 km. 5-6 hours. Max. altitude: 779 m. Min. altitude: 432 m.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Surface: Mainly wide paths. Narrow path for the last 20 to 30 minutes. Loose stones at times. Environment: Cork oak, oak, pine and sweet chestnut forest.

Siesta – a chance to lounge by the pool on site.

17.00-18.00 Relaxation/yoga with Anamet.

19.00 – 20.00 Dinner at a restaurant (included in the price).

20.30 Back at the folk high school. Anna gives a talk about "Taking ownership of your working life". Hear her personal and inspiring story of leaving her job as a DR documentary maker, a dream job, to throw herself into free fall – without a safety harness – and create her own job in an industry she knew nothing about.

We finish with an evening song

Beliggenhed & ophold

Where we stay

The course takes place in the mountain village of Gaucín in Andalusia, about 90 minutes' drive south-west of Malaga – in the direction of Gibraltar.

Gaucín, situated at an altitude of 626 metres, is a town and municipality located in the mountains of Andalusia in the province of Málaga in southern Spain. It is inland from Marbella, Puerto Banús and Estepona and not far from Ronda. The town has a population of about 2,000 people.

Here we have found the most beautiful house, a former mill made up of 7 dwellings. The house is our main house, and it is here that most of you stay, and it is here that all the communal activities take place. The house is strongly marked by the short distance to North Africa. There is plenty of Arabic inspiration with many beautiful details, with a wonderful pool and large roof terrace, where in clear weather we can see all the way to the coast of Africa.

Our extra house is located about 100 metres from the main house. It is also decorated in the beautiful North African style.

Meet your instructors

Anna Katrin Nørgaard

Anna is the principal of Annas Højskole and course leader on a wide range of the folk high school's courses. On this course she is course leader, speaker, coach and jack of all trades. And she loves to sing, which you will also come to notice.

Anna has always loved all things Spanish – taken flamenco dancing, worn flamenco-inspired clothes and taken Spanish lessons. But she never really became Spanish. So now she runs courses in the country instead and lives out her love of all things Spanish that way.

Anamet Magven

She speaks fluent Spanish and has lived in Seville, where she studied flamenco dancing. Anamet is also a trained body-therapeutic yoga teacher and has worked professionally with dance and movement studies for over 20 years. She likes to create a holistic yoga space where everyone can join in, and where it is ultimately about coming into the body and home to oneself.

Lucy Verney

Born and raised on a farm in rural Ireland, Lucy learned to make healthy and delicious food from her mother. By combining this valuable skill with the abundance of wonderful produce grown and made in sunny Andalusia, Lucy has for over 20 years made creative food for many happy private clients. In 2024, Annas Højskole worked with Lucy and it was a great pleasure. Her food focuses on the raw ingredients – it is neither heavy nor complicated, just tasty, good food with her own imaginative twists.

What our guests say
