Folk high school walking on the Camino in Portugal

Fra 14.600 kr.Reserve your place

Come along on a folk high school walk on the beautiful Portuguese pilgrim path to Santiago de Compostela and make room for beautiful nature, reflection and community. You will be in the company of course leader Rasmus Forman, who lives in Portugal and is a former folk high school teacher in Denmark. Can it get much better?

2027 is a jubilee year - a holy year

It will be a particularly wonderful experience to walk the Camino in 2027. It is a jubilee year (holy year), and that means there are more activities and more buzz to the experience. The highlight of the Camino is reaching the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. In the cathedral there are many doors, but one of these doors is particularly special. It is the ”Puerta del Perdón” on Plaza Quintana, and it is only open during a jubilee year, and it is really something special, because when you walk through that particular door, all your sins are forgiven. Yes, you read that right: if you walk through the Puerta del Perdón (which is only open in a jubilee year), then all your sins are washed away.

Well, that is really just yet another very good reason to walk the Camino.

Caminho Central

We start close to the Atlantic just north of Porto and then cross inland, where we walk along the rural pilgrim route: ”Caminho Central”. After three days in green northern Portugal, we cross the border river Minho and reach Spain, where the pilgrim path continues through forest, vineyards and small towns. At the end of the week we reach the thousand-year-old pilgrim destination: the impressive cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, which since the Middle Ages has attracted pilgrims from north and south.

Your luggage is transported for you

We walk 18-22 km daily and have the luggage transported, so you carry only a day pack with water, fruit, nuts and an extra jumper. We take our time over the day's stretch, and only on one day do we have a larger ascent, so everyone in normal good shape can join in. We each buy lunch ourselves at a café along the day's route. (The first lunch is included in the price.)

The pilgrim word of the day

We also make room for the inner journey. Every morning, once we are out on the route, we sing a morning song in the green and get an introduction to the pilgrim word of the day. These are words such as slowness, freedom and freedom from worry. As we walk, there is plenty of time to think further on your own, but also to talk two by two: What does it mean in my life today? How do you experience it? And should it perhaps be given more room in the future?

Silent walking

Along the way we also walk 30-60 minutes in silence each day, to the sound of nature's sounds and the rhythm of shared footsteps. This gives an extra opportunity to take in the beautiful surrounding nature. Later in the afternoon we reach our next overnight stop. Here there is plenty of time to take a bath, stretch your legs or go out for a drink. Every day we stay at good hotels with a private toilet and bath. In the evening we meet for a shared dinner, where we have tasty local dishes & wine and enjoy ourselves after a good, long day's walking. There will also be time to follow up on the day's theme. Welcome to a beautiful week through northern Portugal and Galicia. Rich in nature, folk high school life and meaningful conversations.

Payments

On registration we ask for a deposit of kr. 3000,-. The balance must be paid 2 months before departure.

Meet your instructors

Rasmus Forman is your course leader. He writes about himself:

"Since 2008 I have lived in Vila do Conde, a charming coastal town just north of Porto. I originally grew up in central Jutland and met my Portuguese wife Sofia when we were both studying in Berlin. After 5 years in Copenhagen we moved to Portugal, where we live with our two teenagers.

My educational background is history of ideas, multimedia and pedagogy, and in Denmark I have worked as a teacher, folk high school teacher and in the development of e-learning. When I am not a tour leader for Danes in northern Portugal and Galicia, I work with e-learning, and in my free time I enjoy fresh air, cultural encounters, good conversations, tennis, walking, philosophy, literature and art.

Since 2018 I have led walks for groups on the Portuguese Camino. I am especially fond of the rural "Caminho Central", which goes through old farmland, captivating nature and smaller towns. We also pass wayside crosses, chapels and churches that bear witness to the fact that the route has been walked by pilgrims for nearly 1000 years."

"Besides the physical and cultural walk, the Camino is for me a unique opportunity to ask oneself the questions that we humans have asked ourselves throughout the ages: Who am I? What is my task? What is important in my life? And what can I lean into?

Last but not least, the Camino is also an encounter with other fellow travellers through life. The Camino attracts people from all over the world who have vastly different backgrounds and motives for walking to Santiago de Compostela. Life on the road is marked by a fine, mutual helpfulness and great openness to hearing each other's stories."

Extra staff

If we number more than 20 course participants, a walking-leader assistant from Annas Højskole comes along, whose task is primarily to bring up the rear and make sure everyone keeps up. And otherwise to assist Rasmus if anything comes up that he needs help with. It gives great reassurance in the group, in our experience, when you have two course leaders along on the walk.

What our guests say
