Drawing, watercolour and creativity in Mallorca

Fra 13.800 kr.Sold outJoin the waitlist

Hi, my name is Mette Lehmann and I'll be your course leader, inspirer and cheerleading squad for a whole creative week in Mallorca - because of course you're coming along!

More creativity and joy in your life?

Do you want to get started with drawing & watercolour with a light and playful approach? Do you dream of loosening up your line, making it come alive and just throwing yourself into drawing and capturing the world around you? Do you want to do it in the most beautiful surroundings, while at the same time eating wonderful food, experiencing a vibrant city and gorgeous nature? Then welcome to Mallorca.

I've just got a thing for Mallorca.

Mallorca is just SO beautiful. In my former life as an Art Director in the advertising industry, I shot both stills and commercials around the island. And holy moly, what pictures we made here! It was here I dropped my jaw, overwhelmed by all that beauty. Here I shopped till I dropped and hung out in cunning spots in Palma. Here I learned to drink red wine from "odd flat-bottomed glasses", to sit outside and eat thousands of little tapas dishes late into the night. But also to find a wholly wonderful calm and peace away from the cities out in the countryside.

Where will we draw and where will we stay?

We stay in our two houses in the middle of the island. The Finca, which is the main house and where I teach daily, and Son Pelai, which lies about 3 km away. I'll give you the techniques you need within the safe setting of the Finca. From there we head out on the island and train exactly what moves you as an artist: namely drawing what you see in real life! We'll draw the nature around us and capture details and moods from vibrant Palma.

Send your inner critic off on a very loooong trip!

Here we don't focus on neatness and perfectionism. In my book that's both boring and destructive to our inner playful child. Instead I share my best tips on how to draw playfully, quickly and simply. I'll teach you how you can use watercolour to lift your raw sketches. You CAN'T do anything wrong with me. THAT'S FINAL! It's not about perfect results, but about filling the sketchbook with observations and moments, and creating your very own personal travel diary.

Together with principal, course leader and coach Anna Katrin Nørgaard, we'll also work with the inner critic, the voice that sits on your shoulder and tells you that you don't have the time or ability to be creative? That you mustn't just come here and think you're an artist! That voice is one we need to have a little staff appraisal with! For what obstacles - quite physically - or limiting beliefs stand in the way of you and your creativity? That's something we'll figure out together.

Beginner or seasoned?

I've got your back all the way. Whether you're completely new or have been drawing for a long time, I'll guide you safely through the different disciplines of drawing on location. Where the heck do you begin in the chaos of a big city? How do you find what to focus on? Don't worry - be happy! We start simple, build layer upon layer, and I give you concrete techniques so that you become confident in the process and dare to let go of control little by little.

So are we going to draw all the time?

Naaah, of course not. There'll be plenty of room for walks, new friendships, shopping, an afternoon nap in the shade or a dip in our pools. We also call it your own drawing time. You can call it whatever you like.

Materials?

You can manage with incredibly little. And since we're travelling, we'll focus on getting you a good travel kit. You can see a picture of my little, compact travel kit here on the page.

In the run-up to the trip I'll send some quite concrete lists with need-2-have & nice-2-have materials, for every wallet, and links to where you'll find them.

What now?

You just need to show up with curiosity and enthusiasm - I'll make sure to challenge you at exactly your level and take pride in getting you to discover how much you can actually do.

Are you ready to give your drawing skills a huge boost and get a week filled with lines, colours and experiences? Then come along!

Here is Mette's travel kit.

Wednesday 20.5: Drawing workshop 3 + cooking workshop + urban sketching

8.45 Song & happy days

9.00 Breakfast-to-die-for!

10.00 - 13.00 Workshop 3: "Creativity in the kitchen"

Creativity - both in drawing and in the kitchen. Ulla has been to the market and stripped it of all the best that Mallorca has to offer. We'll draw many different kinds of tomatoes, aubergines, red potatoes, courgettes and beautiful onions. But you'll also get into the kitchen with Ulla and make regional dishes.

We split you into two teams:

Team 1: Draws with Mette

Team 2: Goes into the kitchen with Ulla and conjures up delicious Mallorcan dinner.

After an hour and a half you swap - and Team 1 will now be in charge of lunch while Team 2 goes at it with the ingredient drawing. We promise you it'll be colourful, challenging, fun and will taste heavenly.

13.00-14.00 Lunch - Team 1 introduces.

Siesta at the two houses with the option to relax by the pool, draw, read a good book, cycle a trip, walk down to the little local town of Lloseta or take a walk out along the country road.

17.00 -18.00 Workshop 4: Intro to urban sketching in Palma on Thursday.

Urban sketching really means that we draw on location. Drawing in the middle of a city or in nature can be a bit overwhelming. Where do you begin? But fear not - Mette's got you! We do lightning sketches together and train speed and kick neatness to the kerb. You'll all get Mette's best tips and tricks to simplify motifs, or keep curious onlookers at bay. In short, Mette prepares you solidly for the trip to Palma tomorrow.

18.30 Dinner for all, Team 2 introduces.

19.30 Folk high school songs with Anna: We sing both new and old folk high school songs.

21.00 Last drive to Son Pelai - sweet dreams.

Thursday 21.5: Full-day trip to Palma and surroundings - visit to the Miró museum, draw lovely spots in Palma

8.45 Song & happy days

9.00 Breakfast-to-die-for! With the option to make a little snack bag for the morning, since we know it'll be a while today before there's a chance for lunch.

10.00 "What can we learn from the great masters" workshop.

Departure for Palma to the Miró museum, which lies about 15 minutes' drive south of Palma - so we drive about 50 minutes in total.

The famous Spanish painter and sculptor Joan Miró lived and worked in Mallorca for the last many years of his life. On the outskirts of Palma you can, besides a collection of Miró's works, experience the atmospheric studio where the artist was active right up to his death at the age of 90.

11.00 At the museum we visit Miró's fantastic studio and workshop. But we'll also go into the museum itself. The task here becomes to figure out what makes Miró Miró? Which characteristics and particular shapes, colours and objects recur in his works. We gather impressions in our sketchbooks.

13.00 Departure by bus from the museum to a bus stop close to the water and the impressive cathedral in Palma. From here you head out on your own and sketch the city. Mette has her base at the church of Sant Eulalia on the square of the same name, Placa de Sant Eulalia. You choose yourselves where and when you want to eat lunch. Try, for example, Coca de Trampó, Mallorcan flatbread with vegetarian topping.

You have the rest of the day in Palma. You can draw, shop, be cultural or take a dip in the Mediterranean from the beach close to the cathedral. You eat dinner yourselves in the city.

Lunch & dinner in Palma are at your own expense.

21.00 We meet by the bus down by the cathedral, where you were dropped off, and drive about 35 minutes home to the folk high school.. Goooood night and sweet dreams!

Friday 22.5 How to get more creativity into your everyday life + option for a hike of about 12 km in the Tramuntana mountains

8.45 Song & happy days.

9.00 Breakfast-to-die-for!

10 - 13.00 Workshop 6 - coaching workshop: How to get more creativity into your daily life, by Mette and Anna - who split you into two teams and run a coaching workshop about, among other things, limiting beliefs and courage:

How do you, purely in terms of time, make room for creativity and prioritise yourself? Anna guides you through how to tackle the limiting beliefs and let go of the habits you'd like to be rid of.

So how do you do it quite concretely? Which physical obstacles stand in the way of your creativity? Which solutions can we brainstorm together, and what will work for you? Mette has plenty of tips and good ideas - e.g. writing morning pages, doing lightning sketches, having a tray under the sofa with all your creative bits and bobs that you can just pull out when there are two minutes of calm. But what will do the trick for you?

13.00 Lunch

14.00 Siesta

16.30 - 18.45 Voluntary offer: Option to join Anna in another coaching workshop where we focus on whether we live by our values / alternatively there's own drawing time (more information to follow about this coaching workshop)

19.00 Dinner, Ulla introduces Pa amb Oli + cosy company.

Pa amb Oli, or "bread with oil" in Mallorcan, is a culinary cornerstone on this beautiful island. It's a seemingly simple dish, but it's full of flavour and deeply rooted in tradition. Think of it as Mallorca's answer to pan con tomate, the beloved dish from Catalonia and the rest of Spain.

In essence it's crusty bread rubbed with ripe tomato, drizzled with the finest virgin olive oil and sometimes with a hint of garlic added. But the magic lies in the toppings - a selection of air-dried ham, homemade sausage, cheese from the neighbouring island of Menorca, olives, seaweed, homemade aioli. Pa amb Oli can be varied endlessly and is thus the perfect canvas for culinary creativity.

21.15 Last drive to Son Pelai - sweet dreams!

Saturday 23.5 Drawing workshop #7 + option to hike

8.45 Song & happy days

9.00 Breakfast-to-die-for!

10.00 - 13.00 Drawing workshop 7: Nature quite simply. This morning we focus on drawing and the organic around our finca. We work with motifs and composition. Just as when we drew in Palma, it's all about finding the focal point, cutting away the superfluous and getting good results.

13.00 lunch

14.00 Siesta where there's the option to join Anna up to the lovely refuge Tosalls Verds. A hike in the Tramuntana mountains - where we walk on the most famous hiking route GR221. The excursion is 2 hours up and two hours down, so 4 hours in total. It's about 12 km that we walk. And we climb about 350 metres of elevation. We pass through a very beautiful gorge and see the most beautiful old olive trees - and wild mountain goats. At the top, up at the refuge, you can buy beer and water, tea and coffee. You can also choose to stay behind at the folk high school, grab a nap, or a swim.

19.00 Dinner.

Sunday 24.5 To Port de Sóller with a visit to Helle Alexandersen, we draw in the seaside town

8.45 Song & happy days.

9.00 Breakfast-to-die-for.

10.00 Departure for Port de Sóller - a completely picture-perfect little harbour town lying behind the large mountain range in the finest little bay. There are lovely restaurants, a delightful bathing beach - but most of all wonderful motifs.

11.15 We visit Danish Helle Alexandersen in her beautiful and impressive house in Port de Sóller. Here we sit on the terrace and look out over the bay while we hear about Helle's Mallorca adventure. We get coffee and cake at Helle's, and we're allowed to see her art collection.

The whole afternoon there's free play/option to bathe, eat lunch (at your own expense).

16.00 Departure from the car park where we were dropped off this morning.

18.30 We meet for festive table-setting & Ulla's cunning drink.

19.00 Farewell evening with Paella - the clapping starts on the dot.

Monday 25.5 Departure

Breakfast in the two houses.

Return journey from Palma de Mallorca at 9.55 with arrival at Copenhagen Airport 13.00.

Meet your instructors

Mette Lehmann

Illustrator & art director. Through 30 years in the advertising industry, Mette has worked with drawing, creativity and conveying stories through pictures. Today Mette makes a living illustrating, teaching on her drawing & watercolour courses & designing creative workshops for companies.

"I love travelling with my sketchbooks. Here I bring my experiences home with me. I sketch small quick drawings standing up, or larger, more complex motifs when I have the chance to sit somewhere and observe what's happening around me. Something quite special arises when you draw your travel experiences. Something far greater than just whipping out your phone and taking a picture. You simply cannot draw without being present and immersing yourself in the moment. When you come home and open your sketchbook, you're sent straight back to the exact moment when you sat and drew. You remember all the sounds, who you were with, how it smelled, and the whole atmosphere.

Mallorca is crying out to be drawn. And you're coming along, aren't you!"

The fondest greetings

Mette

What our guests say
