Knitting on Læsø with Helga Jóna
Welcome to a week of knitting on Læsø with knitwear designer and teacher Helga Jóna. Helga has run plenty of knitting courses both in Denmark and abroad, and now on Læsø too. That makes us incredibly happy.
Because Læsø and knitting are a wonderful combination. The stillness, the time to immerse yourself. Læsø also has a proud wool history, with the Læsø wool mill, Læsø yarn and so on.
During the knitting course on Læsø there will be daily workshops where we try out different techniques, for example cast-ons, cast-offs, edgings, buttonholes and finishing, and talk about when to use what, as well as exciting surfaces, playing with different yarn qualities and colours.
It will be a week full of finish and finesse that can make your knitting even more beautiful, which has gradually become Helga Jóna's trademark, as she loves to geek out over every detail in knitting. Hopefully you will come home again after the week on Læsø, full of inspiration for your next knitting projects, and with good and useful knitting swatches that can be carried over to your coming projects.
In addition to top-quality knitting workshops, the week on Læsø will be spiced up with visits around Læsø – among other things we will go and see seaweed houses, we will have lovely nature experiences in Læsø's unique landscape, and there will be talks with some of Læsø's local enthusiasts.
You don't need to be a knitting expert to take part in a week like this, but you should ideally be able to cast on stitches and knit and purl.
We try to help arrange car sharing on Læsø; on the little trips we take around the island, participants can travel together and share the transport costs. That is why we ask you to state in your registration whether or not you are willing to offer your car for car sharing. Here you pay 25 kr. each way to your driver.
Car sharing can also be arranged to and from Læsø – you plan that yourselves through the Facebook group we set up for the course about 3 weeks before the course starts.
Folk high school singing and community
At the Læsø folk high school course we love to sing, and we have bought a proper stack of folk high school songbooks. Besides singing, we simply get to be together in a genuine folk high school community at our own lovely B&B with the most beautiful orangery, where our meals take place. We also have a large common room/library and a park-like garden where you can easily find a sunny nook, as the island is the sunniest spot in Denmark.

14.00: We visit the Museum Farm, a 10-minute walk from the folk high school. We meet Lili Jepsen, who tells us about the farm and the seaweed houses on Læsø.

20.00 Evening talk: "My life with knitting" by Helga Jóna. Helga talks about her knitting life, her path to making a living from knitting, and her travels with knitting to Iceland, Morocco and Japan.

20.00 Evening talk: Meet Tang Henning, who was born and raised at Østergård and who today is the island's seaweed thatcher, that is, the one who restores the island's famous seaweed roofs. He is a truly entertaining storyteller. Everything is from memory. Nothing is written down or delivered with PowerPoint slides.

Beliggenhed & ophold
Here you will find our folk high school on Læsø:
Annas Højskole, which offers the course, has invested in a large B&B – Østergaard KulturBB, located near Byrum in the middle of Læsø.
Læsø is also known as the pearl of the Kattegat, being the largest island in the Kattegat – even larger than Samsø. There is plenty of nature here – in fact nature makes up 70% of the island's total area. And Læsø Klitplantage is therefore close to us.
Læsø has a very special landscape and history – among other things this is where you find the very special seaweed houses, and this is where the world-famous Læsø salt is boiled, which you will hear much more about.
In the middle of the island and close to everything lies the large, beautiful Østergård Kultur Bed & Breakfast just outside Byrum. Here there are 12 lovely apartments with rooms of different sizes and numbers, there is a large common room and a truly fantastic orangery, with a view of the park-like garden that forms the most beautiful setting for our meals.
In the garden there is plenty of garden furniture and lovely sunny nooks, because Læsø is in fact the sunniest spot in Denmark. We also have several fire pits, and we light a fire when the mood calls for it.
On clear evenings you will experience the wildest starry sky, because there is no light pollution on or near the island. It is quite simply magical on Læsø!

Meet your instructors
Helga Jóna
Helga Jóna Thórunnardóttir is a passionate knitter who loves to dive into the details to achieve
an even more beautiful finish in her knitting. She is a permanent teacher at Skals Højskole for design and handicraft,
and works closely with Isager, and has also helped create many exciting ISAGER collections, and wrote the book HANDCRAFT together with Helga Isager, which they see as a reference work, as it is full of good knitting techniques.
She is passionate about good knitting techniques and loves to share her knowledge and experience. In addition to teaching and giving talks in several places in Denmark, she also travels around holding workshops in Iceland, Morocco, Norway and most recently in Japan.
Helga Jóna comes from Iceland and grew up there, and is the former owner of a handicraft shop in
Reykjavík, and has over 20 years of experience teaching knitting and embroidery, and has run knitting tours to Iceland since 2015.
She designs her own knitting patterns, which can be found on her website: www.strikketoj.com.
Henning Johansen
Henning Johansen, or simply Tang-Henning, is the local thatcher who has revived the old craft of thatching a seaweed roof. That is what it is called when it is seaweed, or rather eelgrass, that is laid on the roofs of the characteristic seaweed houses on Læsø. Læsø is world-famous for its eelgrass roofs. In fact they do not exist anywhere else in the world. The 33 seaweed roofs on Læsø are so unique that Henning Johansen, Læsø Municipality and many others are working to have the seaweed houses and Læsø Saltsyderi placed on the Tentative List, the precursor to UNESCO's World Heritage List. We will hear about the seaweed roofs, and we will see Henning in action on one of the houses that he and his men are currently working on.

How to get to the folk high school course on Læsø:
There are several ways you can get to Læsø. You can either take the car to Frederikshavn, from where the ferry sails to Læsø.
The crossing takes 90 minutes – and is made on a large ferry at a pleasantly calm pace, where you really wind down and get ready for the relaxed island tempo.
You can also take the train/bus to Frederikshavn and then board the ferry. If you are without a car, from the ferry berth you can take the bus, which runs every time there is a ferry – and you can ask the driver to drop you off close to Østergård Kultur B&B, Musumsvej 2, Byrum.
It is about 100 metres from us. Book the ferry ticket in good time. You can always cancel and get your money back right up to 20 minutes before departure.
