Knitting on Læsø with Annette Danielsen
Læsø and knitting have proved to be a brilliant combination. The scenery and the stillness invite you to settle into a sheltered nook with your needles at the ready. Not to mention the history Læsø has with wool, yarn spinning and knitting clubs.
Knitting is one of the great trends of our time, and more and more people are taking up yarn and needles. If you, like so many others, love to knit, you now have the chance to become even better when we are once again visited by star knitter Annette Danielsen.
If you can knit a sunset, then you can surely also knit a brunsviger. It takes a good imagination, a pair of knitting needles, a calculator, a little yarn and a good cup of coffee – and then you are almost there. We will try out different techniques, combine colours and qualities, draw inspiration from Læsø – and perhaps an idea will pop into your head that you can bring to life on the needles afterwards.
Daily workshops
During the week on Læsø there will be daily workshops where you get the chance to try out a range of different knitting techniques in different yarns, with inspiration for how to use them. You will receive tips, tricks and guidance for small personal adjustments to the craft.
We will talk about design, fit and pattern adjustment, and there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get feedback on knitting techniques. Besides top-quality knitting workshops, the week on Læsø will be spiced with visits around the island – among other things we will go and see seaweed houses, we will have wonderful nature experiences in Læsø's unique landscape, and talks with some of Læsø's passionate local enthusiasts.
We have arranged all the visits with local enthusiasts, businesses and so on, and we make sure you get off to a good start and are warmly received. But we do not necessarily take part in the various events ourselves .
You do not need to be a super-knitter to take part, but as a minimum you must be able to cast on, knit and purl, and increase and decrease – and have a great desire to geek out and learn more.
Folk high school singing and community
At the Læsø folk high school course we love to sing, and we have bought a good stack of folk high school songbooks. Besides singing, we simply want to be together in a genuine folk high school community at our own lovely B&B with the most beautiful orangery, where our meals take place. In the common room we knit, and in the park-like garden you can easily find a sunny nook, as the island is the sunniest place in Denmark.

Here you can find our folk high school on Læsø:
Annas Højskole, which offers the course, has invested in a large B&B – Østergaard KulturBB, located near Byrum in the middle of Læsø.
Læsø is also known as the pearl of the Kattegat, and is the largest island in the Kattegat – even larger than Samsø. There is plenty of nature here – in fact nature makes up 70% of the island's total area. And Læsø Dune Plantation is therefore close to us.
Læsø has a very special nature and history – among other things, this is where you find the very special seaweed houses, and this is where the world-famous Læsø salt is boiled, which you will hear much more about.
In the middle of the island and close to everything lies the large, beautiful Østergård Kultur Bed & Breakfast – just outside Byrum. Here there are 12 lovely apartments with rooms of various sizes and numbers, a large common room and an absolutely fantastic orangery overlooking the park-like garden, which provides the most beautiful setting for our meals.
In the garden there is plenty of garden furniture and lovely sun-filled nooks, because Læsø is in fact the sunniest place in Denmark.
We also have several fire pits, and we light a fire when the mood calls for it.
In the evening, when the sky is clear, you will experience the wildest starry sky, because there is no light pollution on or near the island.
It is quite simply magical on Læsø!

Meet your instructors
Annette Danielsen
”I have always knitted, but I started designing in earnest in 2006, when my first knitting book was made. Since then it has grown into more than 35 publications and well over 500 knitting designs”, says the knitting-mad Aarhus native Annette Danielsen, who also runs a number of courses and knitting workshops. “I love to let myself be inspired by things around me – to mull over how 'this and that' can be turned into knitting. What techniques will it require, which colours go together … or is it the fit that can express my inspiration. It is a great pleasure to teach, inspire and unsettle other knitters. I love knitting in a group, experiencing how we can inspire and help each other, experiencing that it doesn't matter so much who we are, but rather that we are knitters. I am known for being a 'technician', so from the participants' side there will be an expectation of knitting techniques of varying difficulty”.
Henning Johansen
Henning Johansen, or simply Tang-Henning, is the local thatcher who has revived the old craft of thatching a seaweed roof. That is what it is called when it is seaweed, or rather eelgrass, that is laid on the roofs of the characteristic seaweed houses on Læsø. Læsø is world-famous for its eelgrass roofs. In fact they are not found anywhere else in the world. The 33 seaweed roofs on Læsø are so unique that Henning Johansen, Læsø Municipality and many others are working to have the seaweed houses and Læsø Salt Works added to the Tentative List, which is the precursor to UNESCO's World Heritage List. We will hear about the seaweed roofs, and we will see Henning in action on one of the houses that he and his men are currently working on.

How to get to the folk high school course on Læsø:
There are several ways you can get to Læsø. You can either drive to Frederikshavn, from where you sail to Læsø. The journey takes 90 minutes – and is on a large ferry at a lovely calm pace, where you really wind down and get ready for the relaxed island tempo.
You can also take a train/bus to Frederikshavn and then board the ferry.
If you are without a car, from the ferry berth you can take the free bus that runs every time there is a ferry, and you can ask the driver to drop you off close to Østergård Kultur B&B, Musumsvej 2, Byrum.
It is about 100 metres from us. Book your ferry ticket in good time. You can always cancel and get your money back right up to 20 minutes before departure.
