Knitting in Vietnam
Vietnam is a popular travel destination – and not without reason. The people are incredibly welcoming and friendly. The country is exotic and very beautiful.
Annas Højskole has run courses in Vietnam since 2023, and now we are opening the doors to the first knitting course in Vietnam – together with knitwear designer Annette Danielsen, with whom we have run a series of courses both in Denmark and abroad. Tour leader Nanna Grunwald is also with you, and with her at the helm you are in the best of hands. Nanna has been our regular tour leader on all the folk high school courses in Vietnam.
Many new impressions
The course will offer a lovely alternation between experiences, impressions and knowledge about the country we are travelling in – and calm and immersion in the knitting tuition, where you will be introduced to various knitting techniques.
Annette Danielsen elaborates:
"My experience from knitting tours to other cultures (Thailand, Bali, Japan and Morocco) is that impressions have an immediate influence on our choices of colour and technique.
In addition to knitting, we will also focus on the craftsmanship of Vietnamese women. The Vietnamese do not have a long knitting culture like us Nordic people, but we cannot help being inspired by their craftsmanship, their materials and their choices of colour. Whether it is bamboo, silk or something else entirely, we will see colours combined in new ways – and we will see craft techniques that can be carried directly over to our knitting techniques. Anything can be knitted – and hopefully it will spark plenty of reflection and conversation about craft and women's lives."
Doing it a different way
Annas Højskole has chosen to do it a little differently, because we are a folk high school and like to immerse ourselves and meet people, so we don't race off to see all the tourist highlights.
We have chosen to place the first part of the folk high school course in Vietnam's utterly charming capital, Hanoi. It is a city that breathes history and culture, and a city where Prince Henrik lived as a child and returned to several times – both alone and together with the Queen.
The folk high school is located in a cosy area of old Hanoi and is centrally placed in relation to many of the places we will see. The hotel that forms the physical setting for our folk high school has a lovely roof terrace with a swimming pool.
A folk high school with singing and talks
Every day Nanna will lead the communal singing, and there will be several talks and presentations during the course. It is Nanna, our Vietnamese guide Hung and Annette who will enrich you with their knowledge.
Close to the folk high school are also the old craft streets – also called the 36 Guild Streets – which run this way and that and are named after the craft that is sold there. Here we can strike a good bargain in the silk street, the shoe street and the bamboo street, or drop in at one of the little street kitchens and have lunch together with the Vietnamese.
We are also heading out of the city
We know that it is a long journey to Vietnam, and that for some it can be a little hectic getting used to the traffic and the very different city life. That is why we also start gently, with time and calm to let the impressions settle.
Hanoi is a busy city with noise and traffic, and that is why we also head out into the countryside to enjoy the stillness and the fresh air – and of course to get plenty of knitting done.
First we visit a resort located far from mass tourism, where the locals take photos of us because we are a rare sight. We get close to them – and are invited into their homes, where we hear about life in the countryside. In the evening we celebrate with the locals in the traditional way.
We also spend a couple of days in the beautiful Ha Long Bay, which is one of the world's seven wonders. We knit, spend the night in lovely cabins and eat breakfast while the sun rises on the horizon. (You can also book a massage).
At the end of the course we head to the Ninh Binh area, where, in addition to knitting tuition, we will sail on rivers among water lilies and cycle between rice fields and through villages. Out here we hold our festive closing evening.
A lovely temperature
In terms of weather, November and December are completely perfect in northern Vietnam – it is very much like Danish summer. There will be the opportunity to extend the trip if you wish to travel around a bit on your own or combine it with a beach holiday after our folk high school stay.

Day 2 (28.11.) Saturday: Welcome to Vietnam and Hanoi

Welcome to Hanoi. Tour leader Nanna Grunwald and our Vietnamese guides meet you at the airport.
Transfer to Hotel Anatole, which is the base for Annas Højskole. It is located in a lovely quarter in the old town. After check-in you can relax and have a bite to eat.
16.30 -17.30 We meet on the roof terrace for a welcome drink and folk high school singing.
Annette and Nanna say welcome and tell us about the broad outlines of the programme. We also greet our local guides, Mr. Tien and Mr. Hung.
18.00 We meet in the lobby and walk to a restaurant where we have dinner together.
On the way Nanna shows where you can withdraw money, the nearest pharmacy and a couple of tips for good cafés etc. in the local area. Possibly a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake.
Not too late to bed. We know that you have jet lag, and there will already be many new impressions by now.
Day 3 (29.11.) Sunday: Annette's intro and the Women's Museum
6.30 - 9.30 The breakfast buffet is open, so just head down whenever it suits you.
10.00 - 13.00 We gather in the hotel restaurant and do an introduction round, where you briefly tell us who you are and say a little about why you have come with Annas Højskole on this trip, and very briefly what you expect from the trip.
After the round we sing a song – and then there is knitting with Annette.
13.00 Lunch on the roof terrace.
14.00 - 16.30 We meet in the lobby and walk together to the Women's Museum.
The museum describes women's conditions through Vietnam's history and culture – among other things their important role in war, in trade, in the family – and in more recent times as sole providers.
18.30 We meet in the lobby and walk together towards the restaurant, where we are to have dinner.
20.00 Traditional water puppet theatre – It costs under 50 kr. for the most expensive seats.
Day 4 (30.11.) Monday: The silk town + rattan and bamboo weaving
The breakfast buffet is open 6.30 - 9.30, and you just head down whenever it suits you.
9.00 Departure by bus from the folk high school.
Today we are visiting Phú Vinh, the rattan and bamboo weaving village, located 27 km south-west of central Hanoi. On the way we visit the silk village of Van Phuc.
Here we will see how the silk is extracted and produced. We see workshops and weaving, and we get the chance to shop.
From Van Phuc the trip continues to Phú Vinh. Here we eat lunch. The village is famous for its traditional rattan and bamboo craft, and its history stretches back almost 400 years. Back then the village was called Phú Hoa Trang, which means "people gifted by heaven with silk-soft hands". The people here possess a very special dexterity in the work of weaving bamboo and rattan, and of course we too will try our hand at weaving.
16.00 - Bus back. (Back in Hanoi around 17.00).

Day 5 (01.12.) Tuesday: Knitting with Annette + Chula Fashion House
07.00 We start the day early with an hour of tai chi on the roof terrace. Here we are guided by a local instructor. We sing a couple of folk high school songs.
06.30 - 9.30 The breakfast buffet is open, so just head down whenever it suits you.

12.00 - We meet in the lobby and walk together to a lunch restaurant.
13.30 Bus trip (about half an hour) to Chula Fashion House by Hanoi's renowned West Lake, Hồ Tây.
14.30 Chula Fashion House is a company that designs and produces one-of-a-kind clothing. All the models are cut, printed and sewn at the workshop in Hanoi – and the place here is an experience in itself. A third of Chula's 68 employees have physical disabilities. In Vietnam many are still born with physical deformities because of the poison Agent Orange, which was sprayed over the country during the Vietnam War.
We talk with Laura Fontan, who, together with her now late husband Diego, founded Chula Fashion House. She tells us about their history and social profile. Laura is Spanish and speaks English.

Day 6 (02.12.) Wednesday: Artist visit to Ngo van Sac

09.00 By bus (about an hour) to a suburb where we visit the artist Ngo Van Sac, and see how he works on his deeply original works, which have attracted great attention both in Vietnam and beyond the country's borders. Sac demonstrates his very special technique and tells us about the conditions for art in Vietnam.
12.30 We eat lunch at a nearby restaurant.
13.30 Bus back to Hanoi. On the way Nanna tells us about the coming days.
15.00 - 16.30 – Knitting with Annette on the roof terrace.
The rest of the day you have free – and you eat dinner on your own and at your own expense.

Thursday, Friday: Life in the countryside

9.00 Departure by bus into the countryside. Over the coming days we will experience how life unfolds in the villages, visit field workers and craftspeople – and have dinner with the locals in a nearby village.
When we arrive, there is check-in and lunch.
In the afternoon you can take a beautiful walk up a nearby mountain to a huge cave, or you can relax by the pool (with flowing spring water) and knit – or take a walk in the herb spa.
16.30 - 18.30 Knitting with Annette.
Dinner we eat at the resort and we sing songs from the folk high school songbook.
Day 8 (04.12.) Friday
After breakfast we head out for a lovely walk of 8-10 km. It is not a difficult route – everyone can join. But of course, put on some comfortable footwear.
Along the way our own guide, Hung, tells us about life in the countryside and the ethnic minorities – and we will surely visit some locals.
There is a communal lunch at a nearby restaurant.
14.00 - 17.00 Knitting with Annette.
In the evening we are to have dinner in a local village.

Saturday, Sunday: Hạ Long Bay with an overnight stay on a boat

Hạ Long Bay is on UNESCO's World Heritage List and was recently named one of the new seven natural wonders of the world. Hạ Long means "the descending dragon".
According to legend, a dragon descended from the mountains to fight enemies who wanted to invade the area. The dragon spat out jade, which turned into limestone peaks, so the enemy could not get through.
17.00 Happy hour. The sun sets early in November, and the sunset in Hạ Long Bay is legendary. When we put down the knitting needles, we can instead enjoy the view with a brightly coloured drink in hand before dinner is served in the restaurant.
It is always possible to book a massage on the boat. You arrange that yourself with the masseur.
19.00 Dinner is served in the boat's restaurant.
After the meal we are to sing folk high school songs.
In the evening it is possible to fish for squid.
Day 10 (06.12.) Sunday
The morning begins with tai chi on deck.
Breakfast is served in the restaurant while we enjoy the spectacular view.
Before the knitting tuition we sing a couple of folk high school songs.
Morning: 3 hours of knitting with Annette
Between the meals and the knitting tuition there will be little experiences woven into the programme. It could for example be a boat trip where we are rowed in bamboo boats to experience the floating villages, where the people make their living fishing for oysters and prawns.
It could also be a cave trip, where we visit one of the countless limestone islands that Ha Long Bay is made up of.
13.00 Lunch in the restaurant.
Afternoon: 3 hours of knitting with Annette.
19.00 Dinner is served in the restaurant.
With two overnight stays there is plenty of time on board to relax, sing, spend time together and knit. There will be several experiences along the way. Our guide, Hung, also tells us about the bay, and touches among other things on its environmental challenges.

Meet your instructors
Annette Danielsen
"I have always knitted, but really started designing in 2006 when my first knitting book was made. Since then it has become more than 35 publications and well over 500 knitting designs," says the knitting-mad Aarhus native Annette Danielsen, who also holds a number of courses and knitting workshops. "I love to let myself be inspired by things around me – to mull over how 'this and that' can be turned into knitting. What techniques will it require, which colours will suit … or is it the fit that can express my inspiration. It is a great pleasure to teach, inspire and disrupt other knitters. I love to knit in a group, to experience that we can inspire and help each other, to experience that it does not matter so much who we are, but more that we are knitters. I am known for being a 'technician', so there will be an expectation from the participants of knitting techniques of varying levels of difficulty."
Nanna Grunwald
Nanna is along as tour leader, helping with all the practical things, and she is the one who makes sure we also get to sing plenty from the folk high school songbook, even though we are far
from home. She has several times been along as both course leader and helper at Annas Højskole, and is therefore well versed in the folk high school spirit. When she is not to be found at Annas Højskole, she is a graphic designer, and has among many other things designed books about food, culture and architecture. Her free time she often spends running and hiking, and over the years she has hiked in areas as different as Catalonia, the Alps, Iceland, Norway and several times in Lapland, where she also met her Swedish husband. She has a large family, including two grown children and two grandchildren.

Ja — rigtig mange af vores kursister rejser alene. Du bliver en del af fællesskabet fra første dag, og du kan vælge eget værelse, hvis du vil have ro omkring dig.

Alle kan være med! Programmet tilpasses holdet, og du bestemmer selv dit tempo. Er du i tvivl, så ring til os — så tager vi den sammen.
Hvordan foregår betalingen?
Du reserverer din plads med et depositum og modtager en faktura pr. e-mail. Restbeløbet betales senest 60 dage før afrejse — også via faktura og bankoverførsel.
Hvad hvis jeg bliver nødt til at aflyse?
Vores afbestillingsregler står i rejsereglerne for pakkerejser, og vi er medlem af Rejsegarantifonden (reg.nr. 3122). Kontakt os hurtigst muligt, hvis noget kommer i vejen — vi finder altid en løsning sammen.
Kan I tage hensyn til allergier og særlige behov?
Ja. Når du reserverer, spørger vi ind til kost, allergier og særlige behov, og vi giver besked videre til køkkenet og værterne på destinationen.
